Caldwell 9, the Cave Nebula (Sharpless 2-155), is a dim but photogenic region of glowing hydrogen and dark dust in Cepheus, roughly 2,400 light-years away. Young, hot stars are carving a cavity into the surrounding cloud, and long-exposure images reveal a curved rim that gives the nebula its name. It is a challenging visual target but a favourite of astrophotographers. It appears as number 9 in Sir Patrick Moore's Caldwell catalogue.
