Accuracy of data

Universe Finder visualises astronomical data from published catalogues. Positions, distances, sizes and other properties are best-known estimates and carry real scientific uncertainty — distances in particular are often approximate or model-dependent. Deep-sky objects are placed by direction on the sky rather than at true distance, and are not to scale relative to the stars. The map is for education and exploration, not precision.

Not for operational use

Universe Finder must not be relied upon for navigation, scientific research, professional astronomy, or any purpose where accuracy is critical. For authoritative data, consult the primary sources listed on our References page.

Imagery

Telescope images shown on object views are retrieved from public archives (e.g. NASA and the Space Telescope Science Institute) and remain the property of those sources, subject to their terms. Some illustrations are rendered representations rather than photographs.

No warranty
