Our home star — a G-type main-sequence star about 4.6 billion years old that formed from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust. It contains 99.8% of the mass of the entire solar system, and every planet, including Earth, orbits it. Light from its surface takes about eight minutes to reach us. Every other point of light in the night sky is another sun, most of them far larger or smaller than our own.
