Caldwell 76 is a star cluster (NGC 6231) in Scorpius — a family of stars bound by gravity. It appears as number 76 in the Caldwell catalogue, Sir Patrick Moore's 1995 list of 109 bright deep-sky objects for amateur astronomers. It spans roughly 13.8 arc-minutes on the sky. At about magnitude 2.6, it can be glimpsed with the unaided eye under dark skies.
