On a clear autumn evening, below the W of Cassiopeia, there is a faint gray smudge. Most people who see it assume it's a wisp of cloud, and look away. It is a trillion suns. This is the story of the Andromeda Galaxy — under a dark sky, the farthest thing your own eyes can ever see. This is Universe Finder — a map of the universe built from real measurements, where each object is placed from catalogue data and the best available distance estimates. Our last flight went to Betelgeuse — a local hop. This one goes four thousand times farther. It lies about two and a half million light-years away — a distance now pinned to better than two percent. Hold that number, because it means something strange: The light arriving tonight left Andromeda around the dawn of early stone-tool making. The photon that ends its journey in your eye tonight began before anyone was here to ask what a star is. This is the Andromeda Galaxy — Messier thirty-one, the nearest large galaxy to our own. Watch the sky as we leave the Milky Way behind: every individual star you have ever seen at night lives inside our own galaxy — and now the galaxy itself becomes a thing you can look back at. Andromeda is one of the two heavyweights of our Local Group of galaxies — roughly a trillion stars, roughly one and a half times as wide as the Milky Way. It spans roughly a hundred and fifty thousand light-years — and where you call the edge is genuinely a judgment call, because a galaxy simply fades away. Back on Earth, here is the surprise. Photographed properly, it is wider on our sky than six full Moons in a row — your eye just catches the glowing core. Six full Moons — and almost nobody has ever noticed it. That's because seeing is about collecting light, and from two and a half million light-years, only the bright core crosses the threshold of a human eye. At magnitude three point four — under a reasonably dark sky — it is the farthest thing most human eyes will ever see unaided. In January 2025, the Hubble telescope finished its largest photomosaic ever — two and a half billion pixels, resolving hundreds of millions of Andromeda's stars one by one. The smudge has never looked less like a smudge. And Andromeda is coming toward us. Not drifting — moving at about a hundred and ten kilometres every second, fast enough to cross from the Earth to the Moon in under an hour. For years, the story ended in a spectacular certainty: a head-on collision with the Milky Way in about five billion years. Then, in twenty twenty-five, astronomers redid the calculation — with better measurements, and with the gravity of our neighbor galaxies included. The famous collision is no longer a certainty: the best current modelling gives roughly even odds of a merger within ten billion years. A coin flip. Science didn't lose the answer; it earned a more honest one. And if the merger does happen? The two galaxies would settle into a single elliptical — and yet individual stars would almost never collide, because the space between them is so vast. Picture it this way: if the Milky Way were a dinner plate on your table, Andromeda would be a slightly larger plate about six metres away — and they are drifting toward each other. Galaxies are close, compared to their size. Stars are not. So what would it look like, up close? We have to be honest with you here: what you are seeing now is a visualization — the scale and the setting follow the measurements; the fine detail is our best-labeled illustration. There is no edge to cross and no surface to land on — a galaxy doesn't end, it fades. A trillion stars, each one dim on its own, together a city of light a hundred and fifty thousand light-years wide. When we know, we say so. When we illustrate, we say that too. And this is the part where you come in — because under a reasonably dark sky, this one needs no telescope at all. Find the W of Cassiopeia: the deeper of its two dips points almost straight at Andromeda. From September onward, it climbs the eastern sky after dark. Look slightly to the side of it; your eye's edges are better at faint light.
